Two Noras: 1915 and 2023

My  paternal grandmother, Nora, was a great recorder of daily events. I have her daily notes from 1913, 1914, 1915, 1916, 1918, 1919, 192...

Busy work day followed by a fun evening. It was Ladies Night at Sullivan's, our local hardware store.
Nora and Kassie
I should start by saying that I can't stand the word "lady/ladies." It seriously makes my skin crawl. I can't explain it, but I feel like it's a little degrading. My equity brain thinks that words for men and women should be equal.

For example Ladies/Gentleman are equal in my mind, but you rarely hear men called gentleman. How about Woman's Night?

Okay, off my soap box.

I had a blast with Kassie. The parking lot was packed and they were parking people a block away, across a busy street. Kassie drove to her oldest daughter's house a few blocks away- Caitlin is also one of my godchildren - so we could be chauffeured to event.

I'm pretty sure that every Northside Catholic woman of a certain age was there.

Nora Spitznogle: Wednesday, September 29, 2021

I guess that Grandma Nora didn't have a lot to talk about for today or she was behind in her writing, which I can 100% empathize with.

Work day for me, followed by our volunteer appreciation picnic. We held it at one of our city parks so we could be outside. This is the first time since the pandemic that we've been able to gather the volunteers - it was great fun!

Nora Bauer: Monday, September 28, 1914

Gertrude and I went down to the dress-makers to take down my waist. We went down to Galliores [?] for awhile.

Nora Spitznogle: Tuesday, September 28, 2021

Late manager at work this evening so I didn't go in until noon. Took a bunch of clothes to resale shop.

I tried searching several combinations of where Grandma Nora and her sister Gertrude went, but nothing popped up. Any ideas?

The pandemic has changed how dressed up I get at work and my need for "going out" clothes. It felt good to get these out of my house.

Worked late, not much to tell.

Two Noras: September 27, 1914 and September 27, 2021

Nora Bauer: Sunday, September 27, 1914

Paul came over for dinner today and I got dinner. After dinner Mamie, John, Herman, Paul and I took a long walk we had some time. I had a nice fall.

Nora Spitznogle: Monday, September 27, 2021

Second Helpings work day for me. Started with a video board meeting. Popped in to a going away party for a bowling friend - so fun to be able to gather again.

I wonder if Grandma Nora means that she made dinner when she says "got dinner?" Sounds like she had a nice day...except for falling down.

Work day for me, popped into a gathering at the Chatterbox for Kay, whom I met when I was on the Chatterbox bowling team years ago.

Nora Bauer: Saturday, September 26, 1914

Gertrude and I went up to the market this morning at Got some chicken after I came home I killed and dressed them [?]. I also made some pies and cake this afternoon.

Nora Spitznogle: Sunday, September 26, 2021

Eucharistic Minister at 10:30 Mass at Saint Joan of Arc. Popped into a funeral. Marigold 32nd anniversary staff party and a beautiful sunset boat ride - being on the water is so relaxing.

So maybe they don't keep chickens at the house. Grandma Nora talks about her fancy work, but the culinary endeavors seem new.

I had a busy day. Mass, followed by the visitation for one of our long-time Second Helpings volunteers.

The Marigold staff gathered at co-worker's Mindy's beautiful home on a lake. Great to catch up with everyone and celebrate the amazing business that Marigold is. They are a great employer and very generous to the community.

Mindy and her husband took a few of us on a sunset boat ride. Stunningly beautiful - hard to believe that we were in Indianapolis city limits.

Nora Bauer: Friday, September 25, 1914

Baked my first pies this morning. I was pretty awkward at it I guess. Finished up my waist this evening. John E. Barnes died at yesterday at 1:15 P.M.

Nora Spitznogle: Saturday, September 25, 2021

Worked at Second Helpings this morning. Popped into Marigold to get a gift for a darling three year old's birthday. Worked at Red Key Tavern this evening.

I wonder what kind of pies Grandma Nora made? Why this burst of domesticity?

John E. Barnes is the father of Grandma Nora's (and sisters Anna and Mamie) employer, John I. Barnes.
I had a busy and fun day. Spent the morning at Second Helpings, popped into Marigold for a gift for the birthday party of Jeff's grandson. It was great to see Jeff's sisters and friends.

Worked at the Red Key this evening. Not much to tell about that.

Two Noras: September 24, 1914 and September 24, 2021

Nora Bauer: Thursday, September 24, 1914

Went to singing class tonight. Helen, Clara, Madeline N.  and Gertrude and Marie Rees went to the Ark. Almost forgot to say that I made the best chicken pot pies.

Nora Spitznogle: Friday, September 24, 2021

Took the day off and Kassie and I traveled to Batesville. Chicken dinner with Sally in Oldenburg, cemetery exploring, and ribbon cutting for new clock tower in Batesville. Wonderful day!

It sounds like Grandma Nora is having a nice week off. The girls that went to the theater are all part of the Saint Joesph's School group. I found this penmanship award article listing several of them.
Here is what the saw at the Ark

Like Grandma Nora, I took a vacation day today also and had a fabulous time. Kassie and I drove to Batesville to check out the progress on her house.

We picked up Dad's friend, Sally, and took her to lunch at Wagner's Inn in Oldenburg. I forget to get a photo with Sally, but I did manage to get a photograph of our food before we dug in.

We visited a cemetery on the outskirts of Batesville and found gobs of Bauer's buried there. Grandma Nora's direct relatives are buried in the Saint Peter Cemetery, but I loved seeing the Bauer name all over this cemetery

This baby was born on All Saints Day and died on All Souls Day.
Note the Bauer headstones in the background.

Johann Jakob Bauer

The town of Batesville is doing a great job adding public art to their charming town. This clock face is the latest project.

What a great day this was!

Two Noras: September 23, 1914 and September 23, 2021

Nora Bauer: Wednesday, September 23, 1914

Had some good corn chowder for dinner today. Cut out my waist this afternoon. Killed and cleaned the first chicken today. Left the chickens out any mama [?] had to catch it [?].

Nora Spitznogle: Thursday, September 23, 2021

Scooted out of work an hour early for eye doctor appointment, ordered new glasses. Went to see music at Silo Auto Club this evening. Fun night with some of my favorite musicians.

I'm making the entry extra large in case anyone can decipher the last sentence.

I hadn't thought about them having chickens in town, but why wouldn't they? I wish I had that corn chowder recipe.

I did a terrible job taking pictures at the concert. It was a songwriters round, where they take turns sharing stories and songs. I'm a fan of them all - Chris Wolf, Cara Jean Whalers, and Chad Mills.

The venue is really cool - they also have a social membership. I'm tempted.

Two Noras: September 22, 1914 and September 22, 2021

Nora Bauer: Tuesday, September 22, 1914

Gertrude, Mamie, and I went uptown this afternoon. It was raining real hard. I got a suit and then went over to Hooley's to get my hat. Went to a card social.

Nora Spitznogle: Wednesday, September 22, 2021

Another work day followed by a committee meeting for a fundraiser I'm volunteering for. Pouring rain flooded the parking lot of Heritage Place, so the meeting was via Zoom. Quiet night home.

How fun for Grandma Nora to shop with her sisters. Mamie must have been working. I see from Nora's accounting in the back of the journal that she purchased $4.73 in silk for her shirtwaist and that her hat cost $4.50. Nothing recorded for suit, maybe she just picked it out today. She spent 20 cents for the card social.

Another day of not much excitement. This will be my second year volunteering for the Heritable Place trivia fundraiser.

Two Noras: September 21, 1914 and September 21, 2021

Nora Bauer: Monday, September 21, 1914

Am having a vacation this week. Got dinner today. Manivera [?] and Gertrude were done washing at noon. We did fancy work this afternoon.

Nora Spitznogle: Tuesday, September 21, 2021

I don't have much to report. It was a typical work Tuesday and quiet evening. I looked through the 125 sympathy cards again.

How nice that Grandma Nora has a week off. I searched for any mention of a Manivera or Minerva with Gertrude and came up empty handed. I wonder if the Baurer's had a housekeeper?

Nothing exciting for me today. I'm still overwhelmed by all of the thoughtful cards that people sent after Dad died.

Two Noras: September 20, 1914 and September 20, 2021

Nora Bauer: Sunday, September 20, 1914

Was to Early Mass today walked home with Will and Mabel. They stopped by to say Goodbye they will go away Tuesday morning. Got dinner but the chicken was not good.

Nora Spitznogle: Monday, September 20, 2021

Worked downtown at Second Helpings today, delivered pasta that Marigold collected for us. Slipped out of work for a friend's sister's funeral. Quiet evening at home, nothing much to tell.

You remember Will and Mabel from their wedding last month. I wonder where the chicken dinner came from? I hope Grandma Nora didn't get sick.

I delivered all of the pasta that Marigold collected, thanks, Marigold!

I slipped out for a funeral - a friend's sister died of COVID-19. So sad.

Two Noras: September 19, 1914 and September 19, 2021

Nora Bauer: Friday, September 19, 1914

Anna, Gertrude, and I was up town tonight. I got some goods for two new waists. We saw Mabel and Will uptown. Was to Monticello and Delphi today. Got home at 2:15.

Nora Spitznogle: Saturday 19, 2021

10:30 Mass at Saint Joan of Arc this morning, followed by grocery shopping and catching up on housework. I sure enjoyed the lovely day of puttering and napping and puttering and napping.

It sounds like Grandma Nora had a busy work day and fun evening with her sisters.
Grandma Nora spent $1.38 on the goods to make her shirt waists.

Not much to tell about my day. Mass, groceries, and puttering around.

Nora Spitznogle: Saturday, September 18, 2021

Grandma Nora's day is lost to history and mine wasn't much to write about either. I went to the Farmers Market with Kim, then worked at both Marigold and the Red Key with a wee nap in between.

Two Noras: September 17, 1914 and September 17, 2021

Gertrude and I went to singing class tonight. Anna had her club over.

Nora Spitznogle: Friday, September 17, 2021

Nice day in South Bend/Elkart, long drive home. Fun night with friends.

I've been thinking about how Grandma Nora and her sisters do a lot of things together. I don't think that my sisters and I were ever in any clubs together. Other and riding the bus and going to church, we didn't do any outside the house activities together.
Judy and her daughters and I met for for breakfast. How beautiful is that avocado toast? We shopped in Elkart and had a fun and leisurely morning.
Judy's grandson is adorable!

Judy hasn't changed a bit since college.

I stopped at Cultivate Culinary on the way out of town to tour their new location. They're bursting at the seams!

The drive home was long. It should take about 2.5 hours, but with construction is was closer to four.

I got home just in time to feed the cat and jump on the Red Line to Fountain Square to see one of my favorite musicians, Danny Flannigan

I was giddy with the joy of hearing live music, the nice weather, being surrounded with friends, and a day off.

I have house guests from Dayton, OH, in town for GenCon. David and Tracey have been staying at my house for years and they're great guests. Dan Axler (right) is a neighbor and friend.

Nora Bauer: Wednesday, September 16, 1914

Was very nice out today and is much warmer.

Nora Spitznogle: Thursday, September 16, 2021

Worked half day, drive to South Bend for fundraiser.

Sounds like Grandma Nora had a pretty boring day if all she could talk about was the weather.

On the other hand, I had a delightful day. I went to South Bend for a fundraiser for Cultivate Culinary. Cultivate Culinary is a food rescue and hunger relief organization that we shared information with when they were first getting started. My college friend, Judy, lives in the area and was touring Cultivate Culinary and made the connection.

Jim Conkln of Cultivate Culinary
The fundraiser was lovely, outdoors and on the Saint Joesph's river. Food and music was flowing.

I spent the night with Judy and her family. It was fun hang out with her and her hubby, daughters and their husbands, and her adorable grandson.

Two Noras: September 15, 1914 and September 15, 2021

Nora Bauer: Tuesday, September 15, 1914

Went up to the bank this morning. Had quite a talk with Marie Porter.

Nora Spitznogle: Wednesday, September 15, 2021

Worked at Second Helpings today, Heather Haas trunk show at Marigold.

Grandma Nora has mentioned Marie Porter before. I wonder what they talked about?

After work I popped into Marigold for the Heather Haas trunk show. I love her jewelry - I purchased this beautiful necklace.

Two Noras: September 14, 1914 and September 14, 2021

Nora Bauer: Monday, September 14, 1914

Was up town today. Typed all afternoon, wrote about 47 letters.

Nora Spitznogle: Tuesday, September 14, 2021

Worked at Second Helpings today, hair cut on the way home.

Looks like both Grandma Nora and I had a day off work and not much else.

Two Noras: September 13, 1914 and September 13, 2021

Nora Bauer: Sunday, September 13, 1914

Was to 7:30 and 10:00 o'clock Mass today. Helen M. came in this afternoon and went to Vespers. Louise was there too. Paul, Anna, Papa and I played cards this evening.

Nora Spitznogle: Monday, September 13, 2021

Started the day back at Saint Joan of Arc to meet our Second Helpings food rescue truck to pick up extra French Market food. On to work from there - nothing exciting.

I admire Grandma Nora's commitment to Mass. Helen Minneman must have been visiting from school.

The big news in this entry is that it's the first time that Nora has mentioned her papa! I wonder if he's around and she just doesn't mention it, or if he's working at his tavern a lot. The blue laws at the time would have meant that the Tavern would need to be closed on Sundays.

How fun to play cards with her beau, sister, and papa!

There was a fair amount of food left over from the French Market and they generously donated it to Second Helpings. On to work from there.

Two Noras: September 12, 1914 and September 12, 2021

Nora Bauer: Saturday, September 12, 1914

Went to church tonight and then came right home. Did some fancy work.

Nora Spitznogle: Sunday, September 12, 2021

French Market cleanup today. Tank and the Bangas band this evening at HiFi.

I wonder why Grandma Nora didn't go uptown this evening.

I got to church at 8:00 this morning for French Market cleanup and finally left around 3:00. Took the Red Line to see Tank and the Bangas - they were delightful and fun. Thanks to Novella for the ticket.

Got a ride home from Laura Kehoe and the power was off in the whole neighborhood. I felt bad for Novella riding her bike home with no streetlights.

Two Noras: September 11, 1914 and September 11, 2021

Nora Bauer: Friday, September 11, 1914

Was to prayer hour tonight and then went down to see the dance on the pavement on Eel River Ave. Gee there was some crowd.

Nora Spitznogle: Saturday, September 11, 2021

The French Market fundraiser benefiting my parish, Saint Joan of Arc, was today. Our Second Helpings job training students participate also. Hard work, but fun!

I know that the Logansport papers wrote about the Eel River Avenue dance, but every time I click on a link to the article, a 1935 Sheybogan, WI paper pops up. I'll try again later.

Busy day for me. I'm on the food committee for the Saint Joan of Arc French Market. It's always a busy day for me, I arrived at 9:30 and left after midnight. I didn't take many pictures, but did get one of maternal Cousin Kelly and Adrian popping by the kitchen for a visit. Who knows what was happening with my hair.

Two Noras: September 10, 1914 and September 10, 2021

Nora Bauer: Thursday, September 10, 1914

Gertrude and I went to singing class tonight and afterwards went down to Uncle John's. Aunt Minnie and Uncle John are going home tomorrow.

Nora Spitznogle: Friday, September 10, 2021

Today was a typical Second Helpings work day, followed by a reception for retiring CEO, Jennifer Vigran - it was lovely and the Mayor attended.

Grandma Nora's Uncle John and Aunt Minnie have been visiting for a whole month. Wouldn't that be lovely? I assume that John and Minnie were living in Saint Peters, Franklin County, Indiana.

We hosted a reception for our retiring CEO. The parking lot/garage party went well. With the current surge of COVID-19 cases, we wanted to make it as safe is possible. The Mayor, Joe Hogsett, attended and gave Jennifer well-deserved praise.

Michelle Woodruff (manager of Second Helpings volunteer services), Lisa Harris (board member and CEO Eskenazi Health), Jennifer (CEO Second Helpings), Kathy Jones (executive chef Second Helpings)

Nora Bauer: Wednesday, September 9, 1914

Saw Uncle John down town this morning said they were going over to Frank Hirshburger for supper and to spend the evening.

Nora Spitznogle: Thursday, September 9, 2021

Worked at Second Helpings all day and the Red Key Tavern this evening. Missed a concert I had been looking forward to.

You all remember Grandma Nora's Uncle John, one of her dad's brothers. I spend a crazy amount of time trying to connect the Hirshburger's to the Bauer family. Again, I need a good chunk of time to to sort this all out.

My day was full of work, went straight from Second Helpings to the Red Key. I swapped shifts because I need Saturday off. I had tickets to see Faye Webster, a show that was rescheduled from last year.

Two Noras: September 8, 1914 and September 8, 2021

Nora Bauer: Tuesday, September 8, 1914

Got my trial balance today. Finished my pillow this evening and did some work on my side board scarf.

Nora Spitznogle: Wednesday, September 8, 2021

Worked today, slipped out for meeting at the Propylaeum - great to see everyone. Nice after-work nap on the sofa.

How I wish I could see the pieces that Grandma Nora made! I have a few pillowcases that Rosemary gave me, but I'm guessing they were made by her mama, Great-Aunt Teresa.

I'm a member of the Propylaeum and we haven't been able to meet in person since the pandemic started. It was great to be in the same room with a group of lovely women.

It was a lovely evening - I took a nice little sofa nap with the door open.
