Nora Bauer: Sunday, June 7, 1914

Was very warm today. Went to church this afternoon and walked up town with Hedwig. Uncle John and John were over this evening and of course Paul.

Worked downtown at Second Helpings today, mowed the front lawn before I even went into the house, walked to meet David  for dinner at the Jazz Kitchen. 

Grandma Nora is mentioning a few new people with this entry. I found a mention of Hedwig Bauman listed in her sister, Gertrude's graduating class. 

I'm pretty sure Uncle John and John were her dad's brother and her cousin. John Jacob Bauer was born in 1852 and died in 1938. John Hayward Bauer was born in 1896 and died in 1983. It's sad to me that I was 22 years old when John Hayward Bauer died and I have no memory of him. 

I love that Paul is now an "of course he was there" mention - it must be getting serious! 

I had an unexpectedly fun evening. The grass was embarrassingly tall, so I grabbed my work boots of the porch and mowed the grass before I even went in the house. While I was being a responsible homeowner and mowing, I'd missed a call from my friend, David, inviting me to meet him at the Jazz Kitchen for dinner. I did a quick clean up and walked to meet him. It was great to catch up and run into folks that I hadn't seen in over a year. 

Not a bad Monday at all!

Anna & Gertrude went uptown this evening. I washed the dishes and then Herman and I went to Aunt Kate's but she had gone to H....?

I was an EME at 10:30 Mass. The parish celebrated the feast of Corpus Christi by processing to altars set up in the neighborhood. Hot day! 

I wish I could have experienced a Saturday night in Logansport in 1914! The City census grew from 19,050 in 1910 to 21,262 in 1920 - the largest number of residents in the last 100 years. I'm sure the streets were teeming with carriages and people and horses. Her oldest sister, Anna, and and her youngest sister, Gertrude where there. Nora and her youngest brother, Herman went to visit their Aunt Kate - I can't make out where she was. 

It's fun to read about Grandma Nora doing household chores. I would love to read more about her day-to-day home life. 

Today was the Saint Joan of Arc parish Corpus Christi walk. The feast of Corpus Christi is the festival where Catholics celebrate the presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Our parish celebrates with a procession through the neighborhood while stopping at temporary altars. I love the procession - First Communicants, Boy Scouts, the Knights of Columbus, Father Guy, and the parishioners. 

The rest of the day was spent trying to catch up on housework and such.

Went to 6 o'clock Mass this morning. Went over to Maiben's a while this evening and then Anna and Paul and I took a drive.

Puttered around the house today - I didn't get much accomplished, but did relax.  I worked at the Red Key Tavern this evening -  a busy night! 

Grandma Nora is going all out to make sure that her younger brother, Herman, is doing well in his job at Maiben's. Older sister, Anna, joined her and Paul on their carriage ride. 

Nothing too exciting to report for me.

Was to singing class tonight and then went to confession. Paul called me up and said he would be in tomorrow evening.

Worked at Second Helpings today and cooked at the Red Key this evening, drinks with Tammy after. Sorry to miss John's graduation.

I wonder how many people are in the singing class? Is it more like a choir? I love how many activities are around the church. How exciting to have plans with her beau, Paul! 

Another busy day at Second Helpings. We're in the middle of a big building reorganization project. It's great to go through the warehouse and jettison things that we no longer use. 

My nephew's graduation was scheduled for yesterday, but postponed because of rain. It never occurred to me that might happen so I had agreed to cook at the Red Key. I wasn't able to get it covered. I'm glad that the ceremony was live-streamed. John David is a great-grand child of Nora's. Another one of her great-grandchildren, Monica Spitznogle, graduated in the same class. 

Bonus, there was also a graduate from mom's side of the family, Micah Gremelspacher. 

My friend Tammy met me after my shift for drinks. It was so good to catch up with her - the pandemic is affecting adolescents in ways that are unimaginable. God bless everyone dealing with the emotional fallout.

Got some delayed Birthday presents half dozen silver teaspoons and tablespoons. Was over to Maiben's again tonight.

Another work day, interview potential students for the next Culinary Job Training class. Grocery store after work. 

Oh, the birthday gifts keep coming - how fun! Grandma Nora going to Maiben's again tonight answers yesterday's question of where Herman was working. Herman was still working at Maiben's in June 23, 1925 when he married Great-Aunt Teresa. 

Teresa's sister, and maid of honor, Margaret, would become Paul's second wife after Grandma Nora died.  I wonder if they had any inkling of how their lives would become intertwined? 

Nora receiving flatware for her 20th birthday reminds me that my mama gave me a set of silver for my 40th birthday....twenty years ago! I still can't believe that I'm 60. 

Just a typical day for me. I do enjoy interviewing potential students for our Culinary Job Training program - this group was very enthusiastic. I look forward to them starting their class in a few weeks.

Herman started to work today and came home this noon discouraged and said he would not go back. But I got him to go back and went over tonight helped him.

Worked and had a Tonic Ball meeting this evening. Nephew John's Baccalaureate Mass was moved indoors due to rain - only immediate family could attend. Puttered around the house this evening. 

Poor Herman started work just one week after his high school graduation. That Spitznogle work ethic runs strong! I wonder if this was at Maiben's Laundry? Great-Uncle Herman retired from there. I love that Grandma Nora not only talked him in to going back to work, but helped him when she was done with her work. 

I was disappointed that I wasn't able to attend John's Baccalaureate Mass. The upside was that I was able to attend a Tonic Ball committee meeting - a real live in-person meeting! I haven't been able to do that in the last 16 months. 

If I would just focus an hour on cleaning the house, everything would be sparking. Maybe tomorrow....

Today being my birthday I received some very pretty presents. I got three more piece[s] to my set of dishes, a silver spoon, glass dish, and salt and pepper shakers.

Today is a Tuesday that smells like a Monday. It was wonderful to have a long weekend, but it seemed like there were two days of work crammed into one. 

Grandma Nora turned 20! I wonder what her dish pattern was? Where these gifts from her family or did Paul give her anything? So many questions! 

Even with all of my questions, I'm thrilled that I have this glimpse into her life 127 years later. How lucky am I? 

Not much to tell about my day. It was productive and I still feel behind...which is nothing new, really.
