Paul and I went out to Nellie Bauman's today. Rained a little on the way out but was nice all afternoon.

Had a lovely, relaxing labor-free Labor Day - all of my jobs were closed today. Put up sweet corn - sticky, but satisfying.
Dinner at the Bauman's must have been a success. Grandma Nora went from calling her hostess, "Mrs. John Bauman," to "Nellie." I puttered around today, my big accomplishment was shucking, blanching, shocking, cutting off the cob, and freezing the corn that I purchased at the Broad Ripple Farmers Market on Saturday.
I love the name of this family run sweet corn business. Dad would plant a whole bunch of sweet corn in the summer and we kids would sell it roadside or pick it for Dad to sell at his job at General Motors factory.
Any money we would squirrel away for vacations and such was called "sweet corn money," and the saying stuck. When Dad and I would travel, we would take turns buying lunch or drinks with our sweet corn money.
