Two Noras: 1915 and 2023

My  paternal grandmother, Nora, was a great recorder of daily events. I have her daily notes from 1913, 1914, 1915, 1916, 1918, 1919, 192...

Two Noras: July 3, 1914 and July 3, 2021

Nora Bauer: Friday, July 3, 1914

Was to 6 o'clock Mass this morning. Got a little ride in Gingrich's automobile this afternoon. Darned my blue silk stockings this evening.

Nora Spitznogle: Saturday, July 3, 2021

Puttered around the house today. Didn't change out of my nightgown until it was time to work at the Red Key - slow night.

This was also an entry that I'd read to Dad last week, so it's been rolling around in my head for awhile and I find it delightful - it's such a fun slice of 1914.

Automobiles were starting to become a little more common, but new enough to be a big deal. Indiana has a long history in the manufacturing of cars. The auto ads were popping up more frequently in the Logansport papers. These are from July 3, 1914.

I'm sure that I enjoyed reading about Grandma Nora darning her stockings way more than she enjoyed doing it. In those days they would have been two pieces held up by garters. The postcard above is from 1914.

I didn't do much of anything today. I should have at least changed the outside string of lights to red, white, and blue....It's the laziest day I've had in a long time.

I decided that it was time to get back into some sort of routine so I worked at the Red Key this evening. It was the typical slowish holiday weekend shift.
